You want to use a hero to see what your army is walking into before you get there. A ranged heavy dwarf army is dead meat if it's ambushed, and skaven can ambush on attack. You can use chokepoints and, with the garrison of a walled settlement all by itself and good tactics, beat overwhelming numbers.
Dwarf settlements are amazing at beating sieges. Get it built up a little bit, and get t3 garrisons to give walls to your minor settlements. There's a lot of good oathgold items, but a character like Thorgrim or Grombrindal with regeneration is an absolute beast in combat.Ĭampaign wise, secure your starting province first. Get the 200 oathgold tankard item that grants regeneration for your lords/heroes. Used well they are absolute killing machines against skaven, undead and greenskins, all of which you will be fighting. They can roast your own units, so be careful. Make sure your flamethrower team has a good angle. Use this guide if you struggle with formations that allow your gunpowder units to keep firing. Set up a front line of your melee units/heroes. Eventually replace some (or all) of your quarrelers with thunderers, and upgrade dwarf warriors to longbeards.
Early game, you probably want about 5-6 dwarf warriors, some heroes, and mostly quarrelers with anywhere from 3-5 artillery pieces.
